The Magic of Players Classic.
It’s not often I get up off my arse and head to a car show nowadays, I am in a very fortunate position where I now get to work at some of the biggest events throughout europe which normally has some form of car show attached to it, so for me to just….go to one, feels weird, especially when its 2.5hrs from my house & none of my local friends really go anymore either. But if there was to be one event that drags me out of my village to go and be social, see some cars that will actually give me a dopamine hit & the venue be actually worth attending, it will be Players Classic.
Players, in my opinion is the best show in the UK for Modified car culture. Started by 2 Essex boys with a pure passion for properly built cars, I have nothing but the ultimate respect for them. Not only that, the variety of builds you’ll see, from the most perfect, nut & bolt rebuilt show car, to a beaten up but well loved race car from the 70s, to a Lada on air ride.
The shows have it all. Mix that with the unrivaled location of the amazing Goodwood circuit, which opens its doors on the day for people who have the ticket for it to hit the track & show off their builds too, it becomes this beautiful chaos of a buzzing, lively car show, with friends from all over mixing, with viewing areas jam packed to watch some brilliantly built cars out on track giving it their all to put on a show for spectators.
I headed up alone knowing I’d have friends who I could see there. From the gents at Evolve Automotive, who I’m actually heading off to see this afternoon once I’ve written this to collect my own M3 from them, to Monster Energy Drift team Baggsy & Co, where Ian from the Drift Masters team also works. next over to the Boys & Girls of Drift Games & many other people I’ve met through the car community along my own journey, friends from Civic Life, Honda Culture & my days of being invited to do car launches.
It is such a fantastic place for everyone to head to and have a day of catching up & laughing together, whilst getting to check out some amazing cars too. (plus they let dogs in, a welcomed bonus to any day out!)
Something else I found super cool about the event is that some old friends won some awards for their cars. I caught up with Fyse who has recently transformed his NSX into the car he always dreamt it would be. I’ve known this man since my early 20s (which, feels like a lifetime a go at this point) when we both were messing around with old Honda hatches, always catching up whenever we get the chance, i felt this odd feeling of pride seeing him get his award for top 10 of the show.
Like I said before, I love this venue, I love Players shows, how they run the event & I love the crowd at this event too, I don’t know whether its just the progression from my generation into this event, but it feels like a beautiful gathering of like minding people, just having a great day out.
If anything its made me want to get along to a few more car shows just for the social, I cant explain how much I’ve missed seeing some of these people & Its made me miss the feeling of being around everyone, even for a brief moment in time.
Players Classic at Goodwood is for me, the best modified car show in the Calendar. I didn’t even show a car this year but I was one of the last to leave & planning next year to be one of the first through the gates. We may even have to take one of the cars out on track again too.
